Wolverine 3 to be "Old Man Logan" Storyline

Den of Geek broke the story a few hours ago that the new Wolverine movie is not only confirmed to be rated R but to be based on the Old Man Logan storyline.

While there has been some speculation that Wolverine 3 would be rated R based on Deadpool’s immense popularity it seems that is not the case.

“… the filmmakers behind the mutant superhero film, including director James Mangold, have been planning for years to make a more violent farewell to Jackman’s beloved alter-ego due to the content of the “Old Man Logan” source material.” ~Den of Geek

For any of us who have been reading the comics for some time and not just gaining X-Men knowledge from watching the movies it’s no surprise that a Wolverine movie could be rated R.  Logan didn’t exactly slice and dice people in a PG-13 way in any story line I read.  Especially when he went in to berserk mode.

If it follows the comic then we will see guest starring roles by super villains Magneto, Dr. Doom, and the Red Skull, who have split America amongst themselves after the mysterious end of the X-Men (well, themselves and the Hulk) in this post apocalyptic future.

The script will be written by Michael Green, who wrote for NBC’s Heroes and is also working on Alien: Covenant, Blade Runner 2, and the American Gods TV series,  produced by Lauren Shuler Donner (X-Men: Days of Future Past, Deadpool) and Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past, The Martian).

The 3rd Wolverine movie, as yet untitled, will be Hugh Jackman’s last time as the character.

Filming begins in March of this year and has an expected release date of March 3, 2017.
