Indiana Jones 5 Not a Reboot and Not the Final One

Indiana Jones 5 is set to begin filming in 2018 and will be released in July 0f 2019.  Harrison Ford continues to be busy returning to many of his iconic roles, starting with Han Solo in The Force Awakens, then moving on to Deckard in 2017’s Blade Runner sequel and finishing off with Indiana Jones.

For a man in his 70s he’s giving actors half his age a run for their money!

Steven Spielberg addressed the concerns that Ford would be too old to continue to play an action star in the role he created.

“As Harrison matures so does his character and yet he did so many of his own stunts in ‘The Force Awakens,’” Spielberg told the NY Daily News while promoting his new movie, “The BFG.”

“He keeps himself in such brilliant physical shape that I don’t believe when 2018 comes around, which is when I’m slated to direct the fifth installment coming out in 2019, I think Harrison is going to be able do a lot of what the script is asking him to do.”

Now with talks of more than one more film set for the series of movies there is a lot speculation on what they will do as Ford continues to age.  A conversation with Disney CEO Robert IGER and The Hollywood Reporter didn’t clarify much on what they have planned.  It also may be far too early for them to have anything planned, except, I’m sure, Indy’s well known hatred of snakes.

Here’s the exchange between Iger and THR‘s Matthew Belloni:

You have another Lucasfilm property, Indiana Jones, and Steven Spielberg has agreed to make a fifth film. Will there be an Indiana Jones universe, eventually, like Star Wars?

Not like Star Wars, no. But we hope … right now, we’re focused on a reboot, or a continuum and then a reboot of some sort.

Reboot? You’ve got Harrison Ford for this movie, and then the presumption is there will be a younger …

Well, we’ll bring him back, then we have to figure out what comes next. That’s what I mean. It’s not really a reboot, it’s a boot — a reboot. I don’t know.

THR has been using the term “requel” for these sequels that reboot the franchise.

Requel. (Laughs.) We [got] Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones in the film. But then what’s the direction? I’ve had discussions about what the direction is, [but] I don’t want to get into it.

But you do see making more films?

Yes, I do. I don’t think it reaches the scale of the universe of Star Wars, but I see making more. It won’t be just a one-off.

John Williams has already been confirmed to be creating the soundtrack and Steven Spielberg has also confirmed that George Lucas will be returning to help the sequel in some way, perhaps as a producer.
